Ten Things from Surfing & the Internet on the Week That Was November 27 2020

1. Sydney's Getting a New Type of Pool

Well it's kinda Sydney – an hour north of the harbour city in a town called Wismans Ferry on the Hawksbury River. It's called Wisemans and its backers include Steph Gilmore, Joel Parkinson, Jack Freestone, Alana Blanchard and Bede Durbidge.

The pool is being built by the same people who created that awesomely chaotic Palm Springs pool (Surfloch), only this one will be a lot lot bigger and an A-frame... that is to say, the pool will be unlike one we've seen at all just yet. But the tech is obviously only one part of how a new wave pool ends up being positioned for the surfing public. And this one is going the premium route – hotels, 9-hole golf course, restaurants, bars, member clubhouse, conference facilities...

It's an interesting vibe. A premium resort/corporate retreat style set-up that feels like it's landing somewhere between UrbnSurf's chuck-'em-$80-every-now-and-then-to-surf-it-regularly method, and the Surf Ranch's you'll-never-ever-surf-this-pool-unless-you're-a-millionaire-or-famous-pro-surfer type vibe.

Here's two interesting quotes from co-founder John Du Vernet I found on the website "Bosshunting"'s news piece of the planned pool:

“As a Sydney surfer, we don’t have the access to consistent, high-quality waves all year round like other parts of Australia," and, "We’ve focused on creating a space that thinks about everything beyond the pool, even for the non-surfer, within a resort-like facility in a magical, and somewhat secret part of Sydney.”

Wave pool, for the non-surfer? Got it.

What all this is increasingly starting to look like, to the contrary of what a lot of people thought would happen in the beginning of this whole wave pool thing, is that the wave pool space won't be dominated by one single pool tech that got first to market; that we'll instead more likely see many different types of pools, presented in many different ways, for many different types of surfer-consumers all over the world.

So, when will you be able to surf this one? It's looking like 2022, if you've got your boatshoes and cotton dress shirts ready.

2. Red Bull's Excellent Kai Lenny Doco Series

Here we go, a Netflix style high-end documentary series that follows the wild ocean-life of Hawaiian super-waterman Kai Lenny. The below is just episodes 1 and 2, to binge the further three episodes, jump over here. Gonna binge this all weekend with a big bag of chips and a two litre bottle of coke, saying things like, "I could do that if I wanted, I reckon..."

3. Leo Fioravanti Did a Large Aerial

Much of the pro surfing world is arriving in Hawaii in drips and drabs for the Pipe Masters, the Sunset comp, and Women's Honolua Bay event at Maui, Covid be damned. Leo is one of those pro surfers. He's arrived on the North Shore and, like heaps of other pro surfers, the guy be vlogging, baby! In this episode he snorkels with a puppy, does a workout, and does a solid backside air-rev (right near the end).

4. Jaleesa and Josie Score That Long-As Left

What a dreamy wave. Jaleesa Vincent and Jose Prendergast hit the kilometre long lefthand pointbreak of Chicama, Peru and style the hell out of it. Imagine how much better this wave would be if it were a right, though. So much better.

5. Nic Von Rupp and a Psycho Portuguese Slab

Surf YouTuber hell man Nic Von Rupp chucks on a helmet and hits Portuguese slab "The Cave" and asks us if it's Europe's most dangerous wave, and yeah maybe. But the big takeaway from this clip is all the pushing and groaning you have to do to launch and pack up a jet-ski. It takes up like 20% of the clip. Seems like a lot of work. I'm not sure it's worth it. Something to consider.

6. Nate Florence Teaches His Dad To Surf

This week we met the dad of the Florence brothers, in town in Hawaii for Nate's wedding this week, but that's not why this vid is interesting – while teaching his old man how to ride waves, Nate gives an exceptionally clear explanation of paddling for beginner surfers. It's perfect to show someone close to you might try and teach to catch a wave this summer. Nate Florence would make a hell of a coach.

7. Griffin Colapinto, Hijinks and Ripping

Griffin and Crosby Cilapinto have been dropping a lot of clips on their YouTube channel, Cola Bros, lately. This one isn’t even their latest this week, but it is their most relevant content wise. A few fun waves and a whole lotta hijinks on the North Shore of Oahu recently. Griffin is going for some pretty bonkers airs here, and you get the feeling that his best ones wouldn’t be wasted in one of these vloggy pieces of content. Can Griff go top 5 on the CT in 2021, you think?

8. Lakey Peterson Ripping Trestles

Heartbreakingly, Lakey Peterson has come up short at the final event in a World Title race two years running... makes sense then that she's logging some time at Trestles to rip the hell out of it. The first ever World Title showdown wil happen there in September. And it feels like Peterson is counting down the days.

9. Dreamy Nicaraguan Tubes, Feat Shane and Jackson Dorian,

A highlights package of Nicaraguan tubes filmed between July and October this year, this is just too many gorgeous glassy barrels to take in in one sitting. They're all so green and perfect and fun looking, it's driving me insane. Notable: It's not often we get fresh footage of Jackson Dorian's dad, and right here he has a whole section all to himself (so smooth!),  it starts at the 13.30 mark, while Jackson closes the thing out.

10. That Pool Guy Did a Christ Air?

Jacob "Zeke" Szekely, the guy you might remember from the Korean wave pool footage last month, did an outrageous aerial at the Waco pool and then showed Tony Hawk and some other skaters and surfers.

The Christ-Air is cool and all, but the real impressive manouevre here is getting everyone to huddle around a phone without masks in a state that currently gets over 14,000 new cases of Covid a day. That's gnarly.

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone.
