Ten Things from Surfing & the Internet on the Week That Was November 6 2020

1. Mick at Lennox is Poetry

You might recall that FCS clip that went out earlier this year where our three time World Champ Mick Fanning got a beautiful single fin from Bob McTavish and took it out at pumping Lennox Head, well this is another take on that session (I think). And it's just as awesome the second time around. Plus, Torren Martyn and Kyuss King are amongst it and Torren Martyn's frontside layback tube-stall is so outrageous I've screenshotted and texted it to my girlfriend, who doesn't care at all, but it's always good to share the things that are important to you with the people you love.

2. Von Rupp Does Nazare

You've no doubt heard about the possibly record breaking swell and session that went down at Portugal's premier big wave spot. Seriously cartoonish things going on here, and of course Portugal's premier surf vlogger was there and getting amongst it. It makes for a pretty good sum up of the momentous event, but for a full break down on it all, you can't beat Surfline's Two Days of XXL Nazare piece.

3. Kehu Butler Rules

If you don't know of Kehu Butler yet, there’s no better way to get acquainted with the young man than with this excellent clip. We get a glimpse into the 20 year old rising surf star’s life in Mount Maunganui, Aotearoa as well as a beautiful insight into his rich culture. And, of course, we see him shred with the smooth power that made him the Australasian Junior Champ back in 2018 and one to watch out for in the future. Plus, he has some, ahh, pretty colourful things to say about New Zealand pies versus Aussie pies.

4. Wave of the Winter Is Happening

Sure, we've no idea what's going to happen with the Pipe Masters, the Triple Crown and the pro surfing festival of a traditional Hawaiian winter this year, but one thing we do know is that Covid won't stop waves breaking on that famed north shore of Oahu. And so, the O'Neill Wave of the Winter is a go! It's a little bit comforting, actually, isn't it? Who do you think will take it out in 20/21?

5. Craig Anderson, Ryan Burch and Shyama Buttonshaw at Cloudbreak

What. A. Crew. Craig Anderson might be the most stylish surfer of the digital era, Ryan Burch the most interesting surfer shaper, and alongside them is Shyama Buttonshaw, a Surf Coast Vic shaper of beautiful surfboards who's more than adept at drawing a smooth line. The three of them score perfect Cloudbreak some time before 2020 went all 2020 on us to make one of the better clips we've seen in a while.

6. Kirra Pinkerton at Bank Vaults

"That was it!" What is going on in Indonesia at the moment? Kirra Pinkerton with the sort of barrel you think about for years afterwards at Bank Vaults in the Mentawai Islands. Check this shot she posted on her Insta too. Unreal.

7. Kolohe is/was Ripping

It shouldn't come as a surprise that Kolohe Andino's freesurf clips are borderline mindblowingly good. It shouldn't come as a surprise, but it does. This high performance exhibition comes from the 2019 European leg, a year if we can remember back far enough where Kolohe finished in the top 5. Is he a walk up start in the World Title conversation, if and when we ever get pro surfing competitions rolling again?

8. Pat Gudang on What's Going On?

The On Board Store YouTube show “What’s Going On?” Drops episode three with its affable charm, this time featuring Pat Gudauskas. Pat, like any of the Gudauskas brothers is bursting with stoke and froth which makes for a fun 12 minutes as he tells his story. And they mix it up with a healthy dose of good surfing and surfboard chat too.

9. Mason Ho in Tahiti

Speaking of stoke and froth and enthusiasm and fun YouTube clips, well it's obviously Mason Ho. This time he's in Tahiti where he finds a right (?!) That looks mellow (?!) and super fun (?!). Jealous.

10. Josh Ku had a Really Good Winter in Sydney

It's no secret that the east coast of Australia had a pretty extraordinary winter swell wise. But sheesh, it's still kind of hard to fathom just how good it was for some, like Josh Ku, who collated a bunch of the waves he got on tape this winter and put them down in this edit. This is just Sydney, in just one winter, with just one surfer.  What a fortunate city.

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone.
